Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor Visits Robot Institute of CUHK-Shenzhen

July 24, 2018 Media Report

The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, visited Shenzhen on July 20. This year, the senior officials of Shenzhen and Hong Kong will continue to strengthen exchanges and interactions. As this year coincides with the 40th anniversary of the country's reform and opening up, Mrs. Carrie Lam plans to lead a delegation to visit Shenzhen later this year. On the occasion of the opening of the Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed railway, Mrs. Carrie Lam will also invite the leaders of Shenzhen to participate in the opening ceremony.

The visit to Shenzhen was mainly focused on technological innovation and its application, including the innovation and entrepreneurship of Hong Kong people and Hong Kong enterprises in Shenzhen. Lam and her entourage visited Ping An Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd, inspected the construction plan of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center project and the Universiade Software Town in Longgang District. One of the highlights was the visit to the Robot Institute of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

CUHK-Shenzhen is a symbol of the successful cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong higher education. The Chief Executive’s visit to the Robot Institute of CUHK-SZ and the opening ceremony for the establishment of the Harmonia College on March 29th both show the interaction between Shenzhen and Hong Kong in the aspect of education.

Interaction with Panda Robot at CUHK-Shenzhen

During the visit to the Robot Institute of CUHK-SZ on the afternoon of July 20, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and her entourage learned about the operation of the institute and its R&D achievements over the past two years from President Xu Yangshen. During the tour, they watched the live demonstration of all kinds of robots, including the calligraphy robot that can complete calligraphy works independently, the Smart-Campus inspection robot that replaces the operation and maintenance personnel of the Data Center Room, the four-legged robot capable of performing various tasks such as reconnaissance, shooting, and transportation in a complex jungle, and the bionic climbing-type cable-stayed bridge cable detection robot that can replace manual periodic inspection.

This cute panda robot that the Chief Executive interacted with is positioned as China's first cognitive rehabilitation robot, mainly for the global brain degeneration market. According to the staff, it can make up for the deficiencies of drug therapy and animal therapy. Through interaction with robots, including expressions, voices and touches, patients can improve their mood and behavior, and reduce dosage of medication and side effect.

It is understood that this robot has went through the research and development of the fourth generation, and has also conducted a preliminary demonstration of medical value at Shatin Hospital in Hong Kong. As a medical product, the lovely pandas are mainly designed for Alzheimer's patients, and the adjacent market is Autism. As a household product, its adjacent market can face the only-child, urban white-collar workers, and lonely elders. The robots can help them alleviate loneliness and promote language communication.

The Robot Institute of CUHK-Shenzhen was established in 2016 and the team currently has nearly 100 people. Its predecessor was the Modern Robot Laboratory of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. This laboratory has accumulated more than 20 years of technology in the field of robotics, and has made many breakthroughs in robot sensing, cognition, control, interaction, and energy. Sor far, they have successfully developed more than 30 robots and intelligent systems in the industrial, medical, automotive and other fields.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen has started enrolling students for 5 years. This year, it enrolled 1146 undergraduate students in the Mainland. CUHK-Shenzhen has become the university with the highest admission scores among all Guangdong universities for three consecutive years.

On the morning of July 20th, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen held a press conference to announce the establishment of the Institute for Data and Decision Analytics, CUHK-Shenzhen. The Institute for Data and Decision Analytics focuses on scientific research and talent development in research areas such as operations research, information engineering, statistics, operations management, and decision science. Xu Yangsheng, President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, said that the establishment of the institute will help promote Shenzhen to become a global innovative center for communications and logistics, and drive the development of the data intelligence industry.
